Sometimes more time translates into a better plan

As the days go by, it’s becoming more apparent that this is going to be a marathon, not a race. I know that there has been an outpour of support from the JETAA community, which has been extremely encouraging, but there has also been a lot of uncertainty in terms of which direction we should go in and how we should get there.

To keep you in the loop, we have a very general plan right now, and we’re trying to lay the appropriate foundation for our efforts by focusing on organizing them first. This means that we need to have a well thought out plan and the right people in place to execute the plan before we move forward. Here’s the thought process thus far:

  1. Current relief efforts are limited to emergency and medical workers: After a catastrophe like this one, emergency and medical works are the only people that are and should be providing relief. JET alumni are many things, but I imagine there aren’t too many EMTs or firefighters among our ranks.
  2. Even if you get to Tokyo, how will you get to Tohoku: While the impulse to get on the next flight to Japan will be flying high, we need to step back and take a deep breath. During the Haiti relief efforts, many people mobilized, but few actually had things to do. In Cleveland, firefighters, doctors, nurses, ministers and search dogs were all stuck at the airport because they couldn’t get to Haiti. I know that flights to Japan are in service, but getting from Tokyo to the Tohoku region would be extremely difficult.
  3. If you get to Tohoku, what will you be able to do: As I mentioned in #1, the only people who could add value are emergency and medical workers.
  4. What happens in the aftermath: After all of the TV crews left New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, relief dwindled considerably. Our greatest impact may be helping rebuild the affected communities one or two months from now.

We’re waiting for things to settle down in Japan before we move forward with a definitive plan. Our efforts will be wasted if we create a plan before knowing all of the facts. The Japanese government still has to figure out what they’re doing, and from what I’ve heard, many government offices are still closed. We need to perform due diligence to ensure that we are partnering with a relief program that meets the mission of JET and JETAA. We need to have a national vote on exactly how the funds that we raised will be used and allocated, since this is a national effort. And we need to be certain that once our relief team reaches Japan, they will have maximum impact on the community that they will be helping (there is a real possibility that some areas will not want foreign in person aid).

I know that it’s hard to just sit tight, but that’s all we can do for the time being. Once our plan is sorted, I will let you know as soon as possible. Realistically, we will not be sending a response team over for at least another month of two until after the major emergency and medical work has been completed, organizations that we can partner with have established their plans (from early correspondence with various volunteer organizations, they are still figuring out what to do), the Japanese government lets the world know exactly how we can help, and most importantly, the nuclear situation becomes more clear.

    Thanks Rod. I think our chapters need to move forward with trying to raise some money for the relief efforts. I know that the PNWJETAA chapter has joined a coalition of Seattle-based Japanese and Japanese American organizations that are grouping their efforts of fundraising together to make the biggest impact. Maybe your city or area should consider something similar. for more information, please see http://www.seattlejapanrelief.org

    I think that chapters need to be contacting their local media outlets to act as a resource. Like Rod said in a previous post, local media outlets need resources and people who know the towns and areas. Even though you won’t always be on the news, you want to be the person that these outlets call when they have a question. Anything to help and anything to raise awareness of the relief efforts and the missing.

    Although this is the worst possible situation, I believe that this disaster is the chance for JETAA chapters around the world to really prove that we are proof the success of the program. We need to work to strengthen the ties between the towns we live in and the towns we worked in while in Japan. All chapters need to be mobilizing their efforts, even those traditionally quieter chapters. Japan and the JET Program have given you an incredible opportunity to live and work in Japan, and now these communities need us more than ever to mobilize, reach out and raise awareness.
