The Great Lakes Chapter of JETAA is nearly 20 years old. We have elections in March and currently have seven elected officers. We are primarily based in Detroit, Michigan and represent JET alumni in Michigan and Ohio.
Our chapter benefits greatly from the strong and vibrant Japanese community in Michigan and Ohio, which is supported by the Consulate General of Japan in Detroit. The Great Lakes Chapter is attempting to start planning shared events with Japanese organizations like the Japan America Society and the Japan Business Society of Detroit. We wish to share our love of the program and Japan with our local communities and experience true grassroots exchange. We want to make sure everyone in the chapter has a voice and the ability to connect with our community. Furthermore, we want to help them find their next destination in life in any way we can. We will always have an open ear.
In 2012, our chapter hosted two fundraisers at a local high school to raise money towards the JETAA USA 311 Relief Fund to aid victims of the Tohoku earthquake/tsunami. We raised $2000 at the first fundraiser and another $1500 for a benefit Taiko drum concert by a local JET alumni.
