Greetings from Boston! My name is Daniel Lowe. You might remember me from such amazing JETAA events as the 30th Reunion, and every National and Regional Conference from 2014-2017.
For those who I’ve not yet had the pleasure to meet, I was a JET in Kujukuri, Chiba Prefecture from 2011-2013 and, since returning to the US, I served on the board of the New England JET Alumni Association, first as Social Chair, then as Vice President, and finally as President. I have continued to stay involved as a Board Advisor, interviewing more than sixty ALT and CIR candidates, and hosting orientation workshops. Now, it is my privilege to continue my dedication to JETAA by running for the position of JETAAUSA Country Representative.
As a CR, I would focus on building bridges between the different JETAAUSA chapters through webinars and hands-on activities. While we must acknowledge the economic and social consequences of COVID-19, the JET alumni community has already begun seeing it as an opportunity to stay connected virtually, and I would like to facilitate continuing that momentum.
Fortunately, I have been able to maintain my commitment to intercultural exchange that was sparked by my JET experience. Through my career at Showa Boston Institute, the study abroad campus of Showa Women’s University, I continue to promote grassroots exchange, now between Japanese and Boston-area college students. Concurrent with my work at Showa, I earned my MBA from Babson College, where I specialized in entrepreneurship, international business, and design innovation. This program culminated in a one-week project in Stockholm, where, working with Swedish design students, I participated in an innovation challenge to develop a universal design solution for tourists traveling with disabilities.
Outside of work and JET volunteering, I have dabbled in YouTube-ing (DanKnowsJapan!) and have recently been working on my cooking and photography skills. Other 2020 goals include taking a programming class and passing the N1 level of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test.
If elected, I hope to continue to deepen my connections with JETs across the US. Best wishes, and stay safe!
